When You Don’t Know What You’re Doing

We landed in the UK on the 4th of November. That’s almost five months ago, if you can believe it. It feels as though I’m beyond the point where my answer to that frequent question, “What are you doing here, Becky?” should be better than, “I’m still figuring it out.”

But here we are.

This is a time that feels unsettled to both of us. We’re not quite sure what’s next, what the future looks like, after this initial year back on British soil. Will we live overseas again? Will we stay here for longer? Will we feel recovered enough to take on a new challenge?

In some ways, it’s easier for Dave. He’s taken on a new and exciting role within MAF for this year; it sounds very impressive – Project Manager for Fleet Development and Innovation. He’s working in MAF’s head office in Ashford, and though there are challenges to overcome, it’s given him routine and projects to get stuck into.

“But what about you, Becky?”

Ah yes, back to that question.

I’ve been back and forth a hundred times in the last few months.

I should get a job – we have a budget gap, after all.

I could do some freelance work, do a few hours here and there.

This is the moment to focus on my ministry, on writing books and recording videos.

And back round the cycle we go.

Have you ever found that when you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s all too easy to do nothing? When we encounter too many choices in life, when we find ourselves standing at a crossroads and it’s not entirely clear which is the best path to take, the temptation is to sit down and say I’m not going anywhere. We want the burning bush moment. We want the audible voice of God to tell us to start walking in a certain direction.

Occasionally in life we have those moments. The decision to join MAF back in 2017 was one of them; it was clear, we knew it was the right thing to do, it was confirmed by endless words and signs and provision.

In my experience though, those moments of absolute clarity are rare. More often than not, we’re left with the choice.

I’ve been challenged recently, that the path we choose may not be as important as we think it is.

We want to get it right, of course we do! We want to walk on our God-ordained path, fully utilising our skills and gifts and doing the right thing at the right time, being where we’re supposed to be. We want to be in the will of God.

And yet, the will of God for our lives is specified in the Bible, and it’s quite different to our expectations:

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Be joyful. Be prayerful. Give thanks.

That’s God’s will for your life.

But, but, but – what do I do? Where do I go? What job should I take? Who should I marry? Where should I live? What should I study? Which church should I join?

We want specific answers. Sometimes, I imagine God smiling down on us and, perhaps, shaking his head. In searching for the specifics, we lose focus of the essential: rejoice, pray, give thanks.

I recorded a video series on this exact topic before leaving Liberia (you can click below to see those videos), and yet here I am, asking the same questions, seeking the same answers.

Rejoice.

Pray.

Give thanks.

If we’re doing those things, we are in the will of God. It doesn’t matter what else we’re doing with our lives. It means wherever you find yourself today, you are in God’s will if you make the conscious decision to prioritise those tasks.

I think I have made a decision, but I’m scared to follow it. It puts me in a vulnerable position, one of trusting that God will provide financially, and will continue to give me wisdom as I explore his Word.

My decision is to pursue my calling, to work on my ministry, and that means there will be some (hopefully) exciting things coming:

  • Substack. I have set up a monthly newsletter you can subscribe to. Each month there will be something to encourage and inspire you, along with updates about book progress and where you can find my latest videos / blogs / whatever else I’ve been working on.
  • YouTube. I will continue recording Becky’s Bible Thoughts – weekly encouragements from the Bible on YouTube.
  • Bible Studies. It’s hard work running a small group, finding materials to work through. In leading small groups around the world, I’ve developed a pool of resources which I will look over and polish for others to use for free.
  • Books. I have a list of books I want to write, from exploring the art of submission looking at the life of John the Baptist, to a delve into the lives of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and how they could reach the point of passing through the flames. What does it mean to take up our cross in today’s world? How can we fall in love with the Bible more and more each day? Those are just a few of the topics I’d love to dig into in future books.
  • Fiction. I don’t think it’s possible to overstate the joy of disappearing into a good book, losing yourself in another world, and perhaps finding a bit more of yourself there too, as you dive into the lives of the characters within. I have one novel published already, one complete, and ideas for many more.

“How can I help?” I hear you cry!

There are so many ways that you can help to support this burgeoning ministry.

Firstly, I value your encouragement more than I can say. It’s not easy, putting yourself out there, and doubting whether you actually have anything worthwhile to say! Send me emails, leave comments on my videos and posts, share them with your social networks – it’s completely free for you to do, but it keeps me going.

Secondly, if you haven’t already done so, you can buy my book, No Mountain Immovable: How to Activate Your Faith. It’s for sale on Amazon, in paperback or Kindle versions.

Already bought it? Then please do leave a review. Amazon gives much more visibility to books with more comments. It doesn’t need to be long or involved, just a sentence or two would really help.

Thirdly, sign up to my Substack email newsletter. It’s getting harder and harder to share my videos on social media; the algorithms on Facebook and YouTube are increasingly difficult to navigate. Having my own little newsletter means I can let those who are interested in what I’m up to know about it.

Finally, if you would like to support me in this ministry financially, you can make a donation on my Buy Me a Coffee page.

Thank you. Thank you for making it to the end of this blog. Thank you for walking on this amazing adventure of faith with both of us. Thank you for your encouragement and your prayers and your support. You are wonderful, and the work we both do would not be possible without you.

I’ve often thought that the decisions we make in life are much less important than growing closed to Jesus. As a parent, if my son came to me and said, “Should I work here or there?” I would turn round and say, “whatever makes you happiest, my love.” UI think God’s answers are often like that.

So true – we can get so caught up in making sure we’re in the right place and doing the will of God for our lives, that we forget he is our loving Father, who wants us to be happy. Love that example, thank you! ❤️
